Parvovirus in Puppies: Early Signs and What to Do

Canine parvovirus (parvo) is one of the most serious infections we see in puppies across Hyderabad. It attacks the gut and the immune system, and it can become life-threatening within a day or two — but with early, intensive treatment, many puppies make a full recovery.

Who is most at risk?

Puppies between 6 weeks and 6 months old that haven't completed their vaccinations are at the highest risk. The virus spreads through infected faeces and can survive on floors, shoes and soil for months.

Early warning signs

Lethargy and loss of appetite are often first, followed by vomiting, foul-smelling or bloody diarrhoea, fever (or a low body temperature), and rapid dehydration. If your puppy shows any of these, call us straight away.

How parvo is treated

There's no single 'cure' — treatment supports the body while it fights the virus: isolation, IV fluids to correct dehydration, medicines to control vomiting and protect against secondary infections, careful nutrition and round-the-clock monitoring. The earlier treatment starts, the better the chances.

Prevention

Vaccination is the best protection. Puppies need a series of vaccines from around 6–8 weeks of age, with boosters until about 16 weeks, then as advised by your vet. Until the course is complete, avoid public areas where unknown dogs go, and disinfect anything that may be contaminated.
